Literature Text

Bury a live toad in a fire-ant hill
Keep a faithful watch and pray for him
When the fire-ants have nibbled
His pitiable bones clean
Remove them to an oven at 450 degrees
Scorch them ‘til to powder they turn
To fashion a poultice
For love not spurned

Now, hand-fashion a pouch
Of calf-skin leather
Tie the pouch shut with
Hemp string and a feather
Run a leather cord
Through the top with a bead
Wear it as a rosary
For your new love to be

After nine straight days
Of wearing your poultice
Untie and hide it
Where nobody will notice

On the afternoon
Of that same ninth day
Procure a frizzly chicken
And to the beloved’s away
Stroke it on the beak
With a leaf of sassafras
To quiet it into
A hypnotic trance
When the chicken is hypnotic
Tenderly place it
Under the beloved’s porch
Taking care not to wake it

Straighten up your hair
Give your cheeks a pat
Then knock on the door
With a firm rat-a-tat-tat
(Make sure you get the knock right, or the spell won’t work)

Now, when the beloved
Comes to answer the door
Ask them to come out
To sit on the porch,
In a rocker above
The hypnotic chicken
In order to get the spell to quicken

In the passing of five minutes
The spell will take hold
Their love will be yours
By the time you hit the road
In exactly three days the beloved
Will come looking
To say “hey good lookin’ whatcha got cookin’”
The chicken will jolt
From its hypnotic trance
The toad will resurrect
And perform a love dance
And for the toad’s sake
I hope the poultice you untied
Before you found it a place to hide
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. This is a conglomeration of many steps pulled together from different spells in New Orleans Voodoo legend, to remedy different situations. No tellin' what might actually happen if one actually executed these steps.

NO! I don't practice Voodoo, but I find it quite fascinating...I'm from the South, y'all ;-)
